It’s Kiwi-licious! Zespri tasting at Shangri-La, New Delhi

When popular New Zealand based Kiwi brand Zespri invited me for a special lunch by Darren Conole – executive chef at the Eros Shangri-La, New Delhi, and promised a range of dishes based entirely on Kiwis – I must say my interest was piqued. I’ve always thought of Kiwis as something exotic, and more often than not had on top of cheesecake. Or maybe in a Kiwi Mojito. But Kiwis for main course? That should be interesting!

The event was in the beautiful 19, Oriental Avenue during lunchtime – which was thankfully fairly empty for all of us. Chef Darren was firing on all cylinders – it was fairly evident that preparing a four-course meal entirely out of Kiwis had been a special challenge! Darren has a unique and fun way of presenting a fairly complicated style – and in his own imitable style had the audience hanging on to his every word. 

We started off with some refreshing Kiwi based coolers – something that certainly hit the spot – considering it was a fairly warm autumn afternoon outside the pleasantly air-conditioned hotel.

We got underway fairly quickly – with Chef Darren quizzing the crowd on the benefits of Kiwis. As expected, Kiwis are good for the health and are good source of all sorts of nutrients and all those other good things that doctors love to remind you of. The good part? It tastes great with vodka!

Chef Darren quickly got busy with the main agenda of the day – the live demonstration of the Kiwi recipes.

Once we got through the recipes, it was time to get busy with the food! And THAT was the interesting part.

Yes, I thought it was sushi too. Well, it is sushi – but made of Kiwi and it’s sweet!

All-in-all, a real fun event. Chef Darren did an wonderful job creating a four-course meal entirely revolving around Kiwis. I certainly have newfound respect for the fruit – I still may not include it as part of my main course – but hey! It’s certainly going to stay a part of my “refreshing beverage” repertoire, and who knows – one day part of my desserts!
